At the western entrance to the service camp a long, straight path leads to the lower section of the second amphitheatre. Overlooking this access route on the eastern side are two tiers of buildings. The buildings on the lower tier are large, some more than 20 metres in length. Excavation of three of these buildings has allowed us to determine their function. Two were stables while the third was used as a forge. The smaller buildings on the upper tier were more likely to have served as accommodation for the stable hands. The entire transport column for the regiment occupying this sector was based here, along with the officers’ mounts, a total of almost 250 animals.
