The battalion camp
The western amphitheatre houses the most complex and developed section of Borrieswalde Lager. This natural depression, some 500m wide and with slopes up to 30m in height, was organised into four separate levels connected by broad horizontal paths, set on terraces at regular intervals on the slope. Connected to these paths are the ruins of a number of small buildings, around thirty on each level, which are still clearly visible. Allowing for around ten soldiers per hut this section of the camp could house almost a thousand men at any given time, i.e one of the three battalions which made up the regiment assigned to this sector, sent here to rest while the other two battalions manned the front and reserve lines.
