German camps in the third line
Further back again from the front line, in an area beyond the range of the French artillery, you can still see the traces left by extensive military quarters. These barracks housed soldiers during their rest period, as well as those units providing logistical support to the combat units. These settlements were highly organised, almost like model towns with their collective amenities such as shower blocks and bath houses, and their stables, refuse collection system and ‘tramway’ service. Some of these quarters could house over 2000 soldiers. One such facility has been the subject of exploratory probes and digs for several years.
