The cemetery

To the south-east of the station and Pioner Platz, a cemetery was rapidly created to receive the remains of soldiers killed at the front, as well as the dead from the nearby medical facilities. Clustered around the imposing monument erected by the Landwher Infanterie Regiment 27, stationed in this sector early in the war, the number of graves began to proliferate, many marked with funerary monuments. Some of these gravestones, along with the cenotaph monument, can still be seen in the military cemetery today. After the war remains were transferred from other German military cemeteries in the area and reinterred here.
